Types of Services (Determining When to Strip or Patch)

1 - Direct Repainting:

If the wall's existing paint is relatively new (less than three years old) and in good condition without hollow or blistering when pressed, consider repainting directly over it. Choose a paint color similar to the original for the best results.

2 - Patching and Repainting:

Patching involves removing old paint from affected areas, reapplying plaster, and then repainting. This method suits walls with minor issues like small blisters or paint peelings due to dampness or slight water ingress.

3 - Stripping, Plastering, and Repainting:

For walls with old paint (not refreshed for a decade or more) or large areas affected by dampness and water ingress, it's necessary to strip the old paint and plaster before repainting. This near-complete redo is the most extensive and costly process.

In cases where the original paint color is dark (such as deep blue, red, or brown) and a change to white is desired, stripping the original paint is necessary but not the plaster, followed by a light patching before repainting.

Selecting Paint, Safety First

When choosing paint, consider not just the color but also the quality and waterproof properties. Due to the wide variety of paint brands and types, consult with professional painters. For households with children or pregnant women, opt for paints with fewer volatile chemicals for safety, even though they may be more expensive.

Also, consider if a final coat is needed. Ensure proper ventilation during and after the painting process, keeping windows open for sufficient air circulation to allow the paint to dry fully and remove fumes.

Wall Maintenance

With Singapore’s frequent damp seasons, wall maintenance requires attention. Habitually keep windows open for airflow to remove stale and damp air. Use dehumidifiers during rainy seasons or high humidity to keep the space dry. Avoid hanging too many shelves or objects on walls to prevent moisture buildup.
