Air Conditioner Not Cooling? Here are 3 Main Reasons and Solutions in 1 Minute

As the weather heats up, everyone prefers the comfort of a cool, air-conditioned room over venturing outdoors. But what if your air conditioner is on and it's still not cold enough? Want to get your cool back? "Call Handyman" shares three reasons and their solutions below.

Reason 1: Dusty Air Filter

When the air filter is clogged with dust, it restricts the cool air from flowing out of the air conditioner properly.

Solution: Air conditioners have a protective cover for internal components. Start by opening the front cover of the unit to access the filter grips on the sides or bottom, then carefully pull out the filter. Be extra careful when cleaning, as the filter material is delicate and can be damaged if handled too roughly.

Tip: For easier cleaning, vacuum off the surface dust before rinsing with water. Ensure the air filter is completely dry before reinstalling it.

Reason 2: Dust Accumulation on Fan or Internal Components

Dust can hinder the operation of the air conditioner's fan or internal components, such as slowing down the fan speed and decreasing airflow, preventing normal cooling.

Solution: As cleaning the interior of an air conditioner is specialized work requiring specific cleaners and techniques, and because there are many types of units, a one-size-fits-all cleaning method is not feasible. It's recommended to hire a professional air conditioning technician for cleaning and maintenance.

Reason 3: Motor or Refrigerant Issues

An air conditioner that has been used for a long time may produce unusual noises or fail to start, usually due to an issue with internal components. In this case, it's best to have a professional technician inspect and repair the unit.

Additionally, some may wonder if the refrigerant needs replacing. Normally, refrigerants do not need replacing as they are contained within the air conditioner's sealed system. If a leak has occurred, causing the unit not to cool, simply adding refrigerant will not solve the problem if the leak is not repaired first. If the leak cannot be easily fixed, you may need to consider replacing the unit.
